My Story
I had always struggled with my mental health and joint hypermobility syndrome, but I had a successful career in education and a full social life. Then life pulled the rug from under me.
I married my amazing hubby in 2012 and two weeks later I could barely walk. I was in chronic pain and experiencing many other symptoms. I was so tired I could barely keep my eyes open. I also had myoclonic jerks, vocal tics, brain fog, and more.
Six weeks later, instead of swimming with dolphins in Mexico on our Caribbean honeymoon, I was admitted to hospital. I was eventually diagnosed with an incurable rare illness called Functional Neurological Disorder.
I was housebound for the first couple of years before finally agreeing to get a mobility scooter to regain some independence, and a dog to keep me company. They both made a massive difference.
Months in hospital failed to help and I now accept that this is as good as I am going to get, so I try to make the most of every day.
In 2020 I set up Kindness Community, wanting to make the world a kinder place for everyone. This shop fundraises to send mental health packs to people all over the world. We also send kindness kits - gifts of love through the letterbox - to people having a tough time in the UK. That could be due to chronic illness, disability, being sectioned, experiencing domestic abuse or bullying, house fires, bereavement, or anything else. We do not judge, we simply help as many people as possible.
Everything you buy in this shop supports that work. One hundred percent of proceeds go to Kindness Community CIC to help people struggling with their physical or mental health. I also run a support group in Dartford to help people like me.
I have since been diagnosed with Chronic Pain Syndrome, had a heart operation, and more recently been diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome after nine months of going from bed to sofa and barely being able to stay upright long enough to leave the house for a coffee.
I have managed to continue sending the mental health packs and kindness kits and running the support group, with help from my mum and best friends.
I have now built a community of nearly 8,000 people all over the world and run a fundraising online market with around 6,000 customers, all supporting people having a tough time.
