My Story

I have been a carer since I was 18, mainly domiciliary, but last year I made the move to a CareHome as an activities co-ordinator. I get to make things on a daily basis!

I had my first daughter at 21 who has autism, hyper-mobility syndrome and social anxiety, she is nearly 18 and has turned into a wonderful young woman. My youngest daughter is 12, she is neurotypical and very clever!

In 2024 my mum was diagnosed with mixed dementia, she managed at home for 18 months but then in Dec 2025 she had a fall and was becoming more unsafe being at home. I persuaded mum to come to stay with me for Christmas but this has now been a permanent move. Overnight myself and my family all became my mums carers. Being a professional carer and caring for family is completely different. Yes I have the skills to skillfully navigate the complexities of her condition, but I also don’t get a break. I work with people with dementia and come home to my mum who has dementia.

Years ago I was a member of Conscious Crafties but then life and family got in the way and my crafting was put to the bottom of the pile.

I’ve decided to set up my shop making pet accessories, which is completely different to what I used to make. I’ve gone down this route as I have 4 springer spaniels and 2 tortoises and I am a huge animal lover. I am hoping that this venture will enable me to eventually give up work and spend time doing what I love. It is my way of planning for the future as I will eventually give up work to care for my mum.
