Green Wish Bracelet, Supporting Mental Health Awareness

This Awareness Bracelet is so much more
Than a ribbon on a rope,
It’s meant to spread Awareness,
Understanding, love and hope.

Each bracelet is made using green cord, as in the photographs, as this is the Awareness Colour for Mental Health, and features either a silver tone ‘hope ribbon’ a small plain silver tone ribbon or an enamelled green ribbon. The bracelet features a sliding knot closure, so is easy to put on or remove.

A wish bracelet remains on your wrist permanently, to focus your thoughts on your hopes each day… this bracelet fulfils this purpose, as well as showing your awareness and spreading understanding and acceptance of mental health conditions by encouraging discussion and talking about these issues.

Green Mental Health Awareness Bracelet, Wish for Hope, Love and Understanding

This bracelet was born as a hybrid, a result of a ‘what if’ moment, when I combined the popular ‘wish bracelets’ along with my range of Awareness Bracelets.

The idea of the ‘Wish Bracelet’ is that as you put on the bracelet, you make your wish, and from then on, the bracelet remains on your wrist day and night, until the string breaks or wears through. The thinking behind this is based on the belief that you do not get something for nothing, thus the loss of a trinket is the price to pay for your wish coming true!
Personally, I had a little difficulty making something that was intended to be lost/broken, instead I believe that if you make your wish, focus on spreading awareness and understanding as you put on your bracelet, each time you look at it you will remember your hopes, as well as making others aware, and work to making it a reality. Wearing an awareness bracelet can help to normalise the condition, as well as initiating discussion and gathering support.

As a sufferer of depression and a long term chronic condition, awareness is close to my heart, as a way to increase general public understanding of a particular illness, disability or condition, and to gather support for its sufferers.
Wearing an awareness bracelet can help to normalise the condition, as well as initiating discussion and gathering support.

Depression in all its forms is a debilitating yet invisible condition, and due to the misconceptions and a general lack of understanding surrounding mental health, sufferers often feel isolated and misunderstood.
Fortunately the public perception and attitude to mental health is changing, albeit slowly, and it is becoming something that can begin to be discussed more openly, although many sufferers will be anxious about the reactions of friends and family.
Indeed, it is estimated that 1 in 3 people will suffer from some sort of depression or mental health issues at some time in their lives, so it is not a subject that we can ignore!

As we become more aware of the wide ranging effects of depression and related mental health conditions, we are learning how to best support sufferers, be it in the workplace or at home.
You don’t need to be an expert to start talking about mental health, sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is to let someone know that you are there for them and simply listen.

❤️Talk, but listen too, simply being there will mean a lot.

❤️Take your lead from the person, ask them how best you can help.

❤️Avoid saying things like ‘Cheer up’, ‘I’m sure it’ll pass’ and ‘Pull yourself together’ this definitely won’t help.

❤️Accept them as they are, be open minded and non-judgemental.

❤️Keep in touch, send a text or just ask someone how they are doing.

❤️Don’t stop including them in your plans, even if they always seem to say no. They might not feel like socialising, but still want to be asked!

❤️Don’t just talk about their depression, chat about everyday things as well.

Spread Awareness of mental health conditions whilst showing your support for all sufferers.

*please note, a proportion of money raised by sale of my mental health jewellery is used to create and donate more awareness jewellery to mental health projects.
I have found this to be more in keeping with my own beliefs than simply donating money to various mental health organisations, as this way I can target individuals or organisations  personally close to me or my customers.
If you wish to suggest a recipient or cause close to your heart, let me know when you purchase.

Working together, maybe we can begin to make a difference.

My Story

I used to be an active primary school teacher, until problems arising from Congenital Hip Dislocation and Bi Lateral Hip Dysplasia. Shortly after the birth of my children, I developed Severe Arthritis in my left hip. After some time and waiting lists (another story!) I had an osteotomy to create a hip socket, then a year later I underwent a hip replacement on my left hip. I returned to work and caring for my family, but the hip was never ‘right’ and still caused issues. To cut a very long story short, after multiple surgeries, eventually I was discovered to have Osteomyelitis (a severe bone infection). This meant removal of the entire prosthesis and iv antibiotic before replacing the hip again. However, Chronic Pain ensued. And ultimately I was offered the option of total permanent removal of the implant leaving me disabled but without pain. Sadly, that didn’t work out too well, and the same level of pain ensued. I was referred to various PMU and underwent many procedures, and have had a spinal cord stimulator implant.

Gemstones have long been my passion, and I’ve always dabbled making gemstone bracelets and pressing them onto my long suffering friends whenever they mentioned some ailment. It was a natural progression for me, when I had to retire from teaching on medical grounds, to begin making my jewellery to sell. This began simply as a way to keep busy, whilst I was in and out of hospital, and I only ever made items to order for people I knew.. but they were paying me, so I could buy more sparkly rocks!
Now I make all sorts of jewellery, but each item is still made with as much love as those first bracelets, and the recipient is the main focus at the centre of everything I create.
So I’m afraid I don’t have ready made items that I can pop into a Jiffy bag when you order, but I will create a specially commissioned piece just for you!
This story started with me as an active young(ish) mum with a career I loved. Now my children are grown up with homes and families, working and living their own lives, my husband is my carer, and I spend a lot of time in bed!
