My Story
We're Karen and Sharon, the Founders of Mightie Makers!
Karen's Story: ![]()
In 2011 I was perfectly healthy going about my workaholic lifestyle when BOOM! – I started fainting up to 10 times a day and my bed became my best friend. A year later I was diagnosed with POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) a rare condition affecting the blood vessels and heart rate. There’s no cure, but reaching out to others with the same condition has been a huge help in learning to live with it. 3 years later I was told my POTS was caused by EDS (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome) a connective tissue disorder affecting the skin, cartilage, ligaments & blood vessels – everything that holds us together! I also have some bonus conditions: fibromyalgia, raynaud’s disease, osteoarthritis, chronic pain syndrome, anxiety & depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, migraines, plantar fasciitis, mast cell activation syndrome, dequervains tenosynovitis, wartenberg syndrome, chronic instability basal thumb joint, dermatitis/eczema and asthma. Life has been tough, but I’ve met some wonderfully strong friends who also live with chronic illnesses. Many have turned to craft to bring joy into their lives and regain their purpose. This incredible group of people are the worlds untapped talent x
Sharon's Story:![]()
I am Sharon, co founder of Mightie Makers but also chief creator of all things LUSH at Gert Lush Designs. I am an eclectic little maker based in Bristol UK (hence the business name!) I live with various chronic health conditions like Restless Leg Syndrome, Sleep Apnea, Lymphedema, T2 Diabetes and Osteoarthritis plus I have lived with Depression and Anxiety since my late teens. Because of my health conditions I tend to be housebound quite often so I started a few years ago to use my creative skills to keep me busy and sane whilst bringing some happiness to others and hopefully help the planet a little along the way. I will be bringing a variety of things to Mightie Makers. I have a love affair with my sewing machine and use this to make eco-friendly drawstring bags that can be a colourful alternative to single use wrapping paper or used as storage bags. I welcome commissions on these especially if you would like larger ones than what is available in my shop or would like a specific fabric. I also love to make cosmetics bags, handbags, zipper bags and pouches….the list goes on! When I first started out I also used to love making wirework jewellery, my hands struggle a bit more with it these days but I do still dabble with it occasionally and still have plenty of my jewellery still available. My last creative outlet (for now…!) is my artwork, I love to doodle, and paint in acrylics. I mainly sell these as cards at the moment, little frameable pieces as well as cards to send to make people smile, who knows what they may get added to in the future! I hope you enjoy looking through my shop and feel free to get in touch if you would like something more specific or more personal to you created!
